What does Level IIIA mean?

Level IIIA is a ballistic protection level designed to protect against many common handgun threats.

Under NIJ testing standards, Level IIIA is tested against high-velocity handgun rounds including .357 SIG and .44 Magnum. It is considered one of the highest protection levels for soft body armor, but it is not designed for rifle rounds such as 5.56 or 7.62.

In simple terms: Level IIIA = handgun protection, including threats up to .44 Magnum under the applicable NIJ test standard.
